The final round of the 2010 season got underway at Valencia on Friday morning with the first 125cc practice, and it was Tuenti Racing rider Efrén Vázquez who sprung a surprise by topping the timesheet. The Spaniard’s 18th and final lap of the first of the three scheduled practices – a 1’41.355 – left him 0.031s ahead of Marc Márquez.
The Red Bull Ajo Motorsport rider, who is aiming to be crowned 125cc World Champion this weekend as he takes a 17-point lead into the last round, was leading the session with his own late lap of 1’41.386 but had to settle for second position, with Bancaja Aspar rider Bradley Smith just 0.078s behind in third and the last rider under 1’42”.
Pol Espargaró (Tuenti Racing), who along with Smith is riding his final race in the category this weekend, was just over six-tenths of a second off the Brit, with Sandro Cortese (Avant Mitsubishi Ajo) completing the top five.
Nico Terol (Bancaja Aspar), who is second in the Championship and the only rider still able to challenge Márquez for the title in this final round, was forced to end his session 15 minutes early due to an engine problem. He finished 1.3s off Vázquez’s time.
The 125cc class returns to the track at 1.05pm local time for the second practice session.
