As was the case with the MotoGP and 125cc classes at Estoril on Saturday qualification for the Moto2 category was cancelled due to poor weather conditions, meaning the starting grid was determined by the combined practice times.
With the fastest lap across all three sessions Fimmco Speed Up rider Gabor Talmacsi’s FP2 time of 1’50.916 on Friday handed him his first Moto2 pole of the season, something he hopes will not only lead to a good race but also serve as a potential boost for his plans next season.
“The conditions are so difficult because it’s been raining all weekend and the track’s been so slippery, but during FP2 I decided with my team to change to slick tyres as half the track was wet and half dry,” said Talmacsi. “But I had good confidence and I pushed over the limit and took this great result! At the moment I don’t have a contract for 2011, and this pole has given me confidence and I believe in myself and the team so I will try my best.”
Julián Simón will start from second position as he battles with Andrea Iannone for runner-up spot in the Championship, and with the Italian down in 35th the Mapfre Aspar man’s prospects look promising.
“I’m happy with second because tomorrow I’ll be able to make a good start, the only problem is the weather!” said the Spaniard. “I think the decision to cancel QP was the best one because the situation was too difficult for all the riders. I hope for normal weather tomorrow but if there’s rain I just hope it’s not as bad as today. I think it’s possible to have a good race and get a good result.”
World Champion Toni Elías will get his race underway from third position, and the Gresini Racing rider said: “It was really difficult. There are a lot of bumps on this track and there were many spots of water. These conditions are very dangerous. We worked on our wet setting so we are ready for tomorrow if it rains, but I would prefer if it was dry! The bike is perfect in dry conditions and it would be a better race for us in dry conditions as opposed to wet.”
Completing the front row and impressing greatly as he makes his World Championship debut Turkish rider Kenan Sofuoglu showed no signs of unfamiliarity with his Technomag-CIP Suter bike.
“The track conditions were difficult for everyone but maybe even a little more so for me because I don’t know the track, my team, the bike, even the tyres!” he said. “But when I went on track I felt there was a lot of potential for going fast on the bike. I’m just trying to understand it all because it’s completely different to what I have raced before. I have a good feeling with it in the wet now, but I would like to see how it goes in the dry because I haven’t tried it in dry conditions.”
As with the other categories the Moto2 riders will have an extended half-hour warm up on Sunday, due to get underway at 8.40am, with the race scheduled for 11.15am (local times).
