Colin Edwards was forced to retire from the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix after 17 laps on Sunday as he experienced problems with his rear tyre during the race. The 36 year-old was one of only four riders to opt for the extra hard Bridgestone rear slick, but struggled for grip on the edge of the compound and changed to the softer option after 11 laps.
That yielded better lap times but the American was ultimately forced to retire from the race and said: “I had a problem with edge grip from the start and I was having an issue turning. I was riding on the limit but way off the pace so I pulled in for the softer tyre and did a few laps and my lap times were immediately better. The tyre choice cost me today but congratulations to Ben. He's just riding at an amazing level and second in this field is something to be proud of,” added Edwards of team-mate Spies’ second place.
Edwards’ difficult weekend was compounded by the tragic death of 13 year-old USGPRU rider Peter Lenz, who crashed during the warm up lap for the MD250H race on Sunday morning.
“I was shattered after I heard the news. I have known Peter for a while and am good friends with him and his dad. They were in and out of my motorhome this weekend and when I heard the news my heart ached. In the end I decided to race, after a while I knew it was what I had to do,” said Edwards.
A statement from Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation President and CEO Jeff Belskus read: “Our hearts go out to the parents, family and friends of Peter Lenz. Words cannot adequately express the sadness of our company and our employees about this tragic incident and Peter is in our thoughts and prayers.”
