“It’s never nice to have an operation, but we've had a lot of time searching for an answer to the effects of this injury and I’m relaxed because I finally know what has happened,” stated Dani Pedrosa in a press release on Thursday, in reference to the physical problem which has continued to trouble him for almost six months now.
The Repsol Honda rider suffered his injury – a fractured collarbone – last October in a free practice session crash at Motegi, and he was forced to undergo surgery to plate the bone and miss three races (Japan, Malaysia and Australia) as a consequence. Pedrosa did attempt to ride at Phillip Island, just two weeks later, but the pain proved too great and after two sessions it was decided that he had not recovered sufficiently.
Pedrosa did return for the final two races, the penultimate being Estoril on October 31st, but during the weekend he experienced numbness and a loss of sensation in his hand, something which reoccurred at the final race of the 2010 campaign at Valencia and again at the post-season Test at the same venue.
In mid-November Pedrosa underwent a series of medical tests at the Clínica Dexeus in Barcelona, after which he had fresh surgery. A recovery period of four weeks to allow a comprehensive healing process to take place was prescribed by doctors, and Pedrosa did not start a gradual physical programme of training until early January after being given the go-ahead by his doctors.
All seemed well especially given Pedrosa’s pre-season form and his display in the second Sepang Test at the end of February, but problems arose during the first race of 2011 in Qatar where Pedrosa suffered a loss of strength and sensation in his arm. In the press conference that followed the race Pedrosa stated that it had been one of the hardest races of his life, and following this weekend’s race in Jerez he will once again undergo surgery in a bid to finally fix the issue.
