Alex de Angelis and Andrea Iannone shared top spot on the timesheet at Valencia on Thursday, as the Moto2 Test at the World Championship circuit completed its first of three scheduled days. The pair were the only riders to break under the 1’37” marker as both registered a time of 1’36.7 on the unofficial timesheet, with the lap times provided by the teams.
That took both to within six-tenths of Toni Elías’ pole lap (1’36.141) from the 2010 race at Valencia, as the San Marinese began his preparations for the 2011 campaign in which he will hope for a consistency that reproduces his strong displays of the latter stages of last season. For Iannone today was a continuation of the good transition he showed earlier this week to the Suter machine, having ridden for two days in a private Test in Barcelona.
Last year’s Championship runner-up Julián Simón posted a 1’37.0 on his Mapfre Aspar Suter bike, with Stefan Bradl showing an immediate affinity with his new Kalex as he matched the Spaniard’s effort. Reigning 125cc World Champion Marc Márquez’s step up to Moto2 continued to run a smooth course on board the Suter, the Spaniard timing in with a 1’37.1 as well.
New Gresini Racing rider Michele Pirro was sixth fastest, level with Márquez’s lap, whilst one of last season’s podium finishers Thomas Lüthi is another rider changing chassis provider. The Swissman, on his Suter, was 0.5s off the top time.
Two riders arriving from MotoGP, Aleix Espargaró (Pons Racing) and Mika Kallio (Marc VDS) sat either side of young Brit Scott Redding at the end of the day, all separated by just one-tenth of a second.
There were falls during the day for Robertino Pietri (Italtrans Racing), Simone Corsi (Ioda Racing Project), Julián Simón (Mapfre Aspar) and Dominique Aegerter (Technomag CIP), all escaping injury except for Corti who reported a sore ankle but who did return to the track after his crash.
The Test is scheduled to continue tomorrow (Friday), and concludes on Saturday.
