Damp conditions from overnight rain made it a slow start to the first day of testing in Jerez on Wednesday 24 November, as various Moto2 teams, as well as the Ducati Test Team and MotoGP Rookie Karel Abraham, began 3 days of private testing at the Circuito de Jerez.
First out was Javier Fores, riding for the Mapfre Aspar Team. The current CEV Stock Extreme champion rode for Jorge Martinez’s Moto2 team for the first time since the announcement of his signing 2 weeks ago. His team-mate, Julian Simon, is set to continue testing the 2011 prototype Suter chassis, alongside Marc VDS Racing rider Scott Redding, both of whom are official test riders for Suter Racing.
By mid-morning Fores was joined on track by fellow Moto2 riders Jules Cluzel (Forward Racing), Andrea Iannone (WTR/Speed Master Team), Tom Luthi (Interwetten Moto2), Pol Espargaro (Tuenti Speed Up) and Valentin Debise, who is testing with Forward Racing, while in MotoGP Suter Racing tested their 2012 spec MotoGP prototype bike for the first time with current German Supersport champion Damian Cudlin as test rider.
Also riding MotoGP bikes were Karel Abraham (Cardion AB) and Ducati Team’s test rider, Franco Battaini, both testing prototype 2011 Desmosedici bikes. The Ducati factory team, following on from their official MotoGP test in Valencia, have not brought a Screamer engine to test, focusing solely on the Big Bang. Battaini has been analysing the results from Valencia’s test with respect to front end feeling, in order to create a base set-up for Valentino Rossi’s bike for the first Sepang test in February 2011.
With conditions worsening through the afternoon, former MotoGP rider Aleix Espargaro and Axel Pons, from the Tenerife 40 Pons team, opted not to go out at all today, as did 125cc World Champion Marc Marquez who presented his Monlau Competicion team and Suter MMX Moto2 bike on pit lane in front of photographers, before leaving for the day.
