Japanese GP at risk Empty Japanese GP at risk

The Japanese Grand Prix, currently scheduled for April 24th, could be at risk for the second year in a row, after the 2010 event was postponed by the Eyjafjallajkull volcanic eruption in Iceland.

After an extremely strong earthquake triggered several tsunamis along Japan's Pacific coast, it seems unlikely that the MotoGP series can make its scheduled stop there.

As a matter of fact, one of the hardest hit areas was Ibaraki and the city of Mito, where many team personnel are lodged during the race weekend. The actual Twin Ring circuit is located 45km inland, in an elevated position, and so it likely avoided major damage.

At the moment Dorna do not have any specific news, as the focus understandably remains the emergency operations currently underway in Japan. At the moment it seems unlikely that the Grand Prix can go ahead as scheduled, in a little over one months time, considering the extreme nature of this tragedy.
