Official Suter test rider Damien Cudlin was the first to go out at just after 10:30 local time. The Australian did 48 laps on the Suter MVDS MotoGP bike, with a best time of 1’45.5. Carmelo Morales, fresh from winning the CEV Moto2 championship, also tested for Suter Racing, doing 15 laps in the afternoon.
Keen to get as much time as possible on his new Moto2 bike, Xavi Fores was the second to go out, recording a best time of 1’45.0 in 68 laps. His Mapfre Aspar team-mate Julian Simon, riding a 2011 spec Suter chassis, did 60 laps, with a best time of 1’43.8, the joint fastest Moto2 time of the day, with the Interwetten Moto team’s Tom Luthi.
With wet conditions yesterday and more rain forecast for tomorrow the teams were keen to make the most of a sunny day and with the track drying quickly, all riders were out by early afternoon.
Riding a 2010 spec Suter chassis, Marc Marquez finally got his first laps on a Moto2 bike after the Monlau Competicion team decided not to risk the conditions yesterday. The recently crowned 125cc World Champion pitted out for the first time around 12:30 local time in front of a crowd of photographers. Marquez did 46 laps in total, recording a best time of 1’45.9.
Other riders doing their first laps today were Aeroport Castello’s Kev Coghlan -the young Scot recorded 51 laps with a best time of 1’46.5, Alex Baldolini, who has now officially signed for the Forward Racing team and Tenerife 40 Pons duo Aleix Espargaro and Axel Pons who got best laps of 1’44.6 and 1’44.7 laps respectively.
Iodaracing pair Simone Corsi and Mattia Pasini rode 46 and 44 laps respectively on the FTR chassis. Pasini crashed just after 13:00 but was not injured and went back out to track later in the afternoon.
Scott Redding’s crash just after 15:00 saw the track closed for nearly 15 minutes. The Marc VDS rider hit the grass exiting the final turn and highsided. He was taken to hospital for a precautionary check up and did not return to the track. He recorded a best time of 1’44.65 in 36 laps on the Moto2 bike and hopes to be fit enough to ride a few laps on the Suter MVDS MotoGP bike tomorrow. His Marc VDS team-mate, Mika Kallio, did 61 laps with a best time of 1’46.0.
WTR/Speed Master Team rider, Andrea Iannone, did 46 laps with a best time of 1’44.8. Forward Racing’s Jules Cluzel’s best lap was 1’45.3, while Tuenti Speed Up’s Pol Espargaro recorded a best of 1’45.5. Also test riding the FTR for Tuenti, although as yet unsigned, is Valentin Debise, whose best lap was 1’45.7.
In MotoGP, the Ducati test team continued their work focusing on the front end of the Desmosedici 2011, with Vitto Guareschi joining Franco Battaini on track, while Karel Abraham went to ground after losing the front of his Desmosedici, damaging the bike and losing much of the afternoon’s session. The Cardion AB rider did however get back out in enough time to record the fastest lap of the day in MotoGP with 1’41.6.
